MELBOURNE, Feb 16 AAP - Liz Hurley has reportedly hopped off her rollercoaster holiday
with Shane Warne.

One day after her Valentines Day tweet that "love is like a rollercoaster ride-sometimes
it's exhilarating but sometimes u feel sick and want to get off", the English actress
and model was off.

According to reports, Hurley flew out of Melbourne late on Tuesday night and was heading
back to the UK.

What was supposed to be a three-week stay in Melbourne with new boyfriend Warne lasted
less than a week, the majority of which was spent behind the high gates and fences at
the former cricketer's Brighton mansion.

Her tweet and departure came shortly after a British tabloid reported Warne had sex
with a porn star while he was also seeing Hurley.

QLD:Heathcote killer appeals for a retrial

By Christine Flatley

BRISBANE, Dec 2 AAP - A man should be retried for the murder of a Brisbane radio announcer
because his conviction was "unsafe", a court has been told.

Tyson Alfred Barden, 23, formerly of Buderim on the Sunshine Coast, was jailed for
life in March for the brutal bashing murder of Brian Heathcote.

A Brisbane Supreme Court jury took just three hours to find him guilty of killing Mr
Heathcote as he walked home from a pub at Nundah on January 21, 2007.

Mr Heathcote, 39, died from asphyxiation caused by serious head injuries from the attack,
during which Barden bashed and kicked him repeatedly.

Barden took his case to the Court of Appeal in Brisbane on Thursday, where his legal
team argued the conviction should be overturned.

Barrister Liz Wilson said the conviction was "unsafe and unsatisfactory" as the trial
judge, Justice Margaret Wilson, had misdirected the jury on the issue of intent.

"The misdirection related to an issue that was of such a fundamental nature to the
trial that we say that the conviction should be quashed and a retrial ordered," she said.

The Court of Appeal has reserved its decision.

Fresh hope in southern Thailand

Ahmad A. Talib

Fresh hope in southern Thailand
Byline: Ahmad A. Talib
Edition: New Sunday Times
Section: Main Section
Column: Pahit manis

ONLY the heavy presence of armed policemen and soldiers reminded me of the tension that pervades Narathiwat in southern Thailand.

But that's understandable. How often do you get the prime ministers of two countries visiting the province together?
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his Thai counterpart, Abhisit Vejjajiva, flew into Narathiwat on Wednesday. Najib had been in Bangkok for two days on a working visit .

His visit to Narathiwat, the first for any Malaysian prime minister, symbolises the new approach his administration is taking in engaging major and minor stakeholders in that country.

The visit was short but the Muslim population attached considerable significance to it. Teachers at the Attaqiah Institute, where the two prime ministers visited, harboured high hopes.

Teacher Rusli Der, 62, said the visit would help ensure that the school would continue receiving government support.

The school has a student enrolment of 4,500 and a teaching staff of about 250.

It's a private school but teacher salaries come from the government. Money to run the school comes from contributions of parents and well-wishers in faraway places, such as Saudi Arabia.

Najib's visit was a boost to Abhisit's standing in the Muslim community. That Najib saw it fit to spend at least half a day in Narathiwat symbolises his desire to promote peace in southern Thailand.

It is in Malaysia's interest that southern Thailand is free from violence and any serious political insurgencies.

The prime minister was greeted warmly by flag-waving students and teachers, most of whom could speak Malay but with a heavy Kelantan accent.

Mohamed Salleh, who has been teaching for eight years in the school, was hopeful that Najib's visit would help promote peace in the area.

I sensed undercurrents among some of the teachers, who appeared cynical of the Thai government's approach.

But the teachers were quick to point out that Najib's visit had given fresh hope for the start of something more meaningful than just promises and rhetoric.

Unknown to most of us in Narathiwat, there were several shootings and explosions in the area a day before the visit.

The shootings were a message too, I'm sure, something that both Abhisit and Najib can't ignore now that they have shown their commitment to look for a meaningful solution to the troubled south.

OF BRIYANI AND COAT HANGERS

Everyone reminded me not to forget to try the briyani in Hyderabad in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India.

My first Hyderabad briyani was at the hotel where I was staying, the Hampshire Plaza.

The hotel offers chicken or lamb briyani every night as part of its buffet supper spread, which starts at 11pm and ends at 3am.

By the time I left the airport and checked in at 1.30am, and the airline food was as most airlines food was, the 2am supper was most welcome.

It was indeed a culinary delight. A search on the Internet will tell you that Hyderabad is also tagged as the "Briyani City". A glass of masala tea makes a nice end to a most satisfying supper.

Hyderabad was the venue for the World Editors Forum, an annual convention where editors talk shop and exchange ideas on how to stay relevant and remain profitable.

Hyderabad offers some learning experience for visitors.

Life can be very tough for a country with a population of more than 1.2 billion. Hyderabad has a population of four million, more if you include those who commute to the city.

I came across one of the hallmarks of the Indian economy that has made the country exciting. It's called "appropriate technology". This time, I found it on the headrest of the driver's seat in a hired Toyota.

The driver had a sturdy, chrome-plated coat hanger fixed to the headrest to enable the passenger to hang his jacket or coat. After a long flight, this may be necessary.

This may seem trivial to some people, but imagine the thought process that has gone into making the hanger available to a weary traveller.

This is exactly the kind of consideration that has helped make India what it is today - home to some of the world's best brand names.

I can't help but compare this with the MAS aircraft that flew my colleagues and I to Hyderabad and back. There was no place to hang our jackets. Everyone either had it on the lap or wore it.

Usually, the steward or stewardess would come around and offer to take the jacket from passengers and hang it in the small closet designed for such purpose.

I'm not sure why there was no such facility on my flight (I believe the aircraft was a Boeing 737-800).

Even the seats in the business class section were rather cramped. The seats in the same class from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Baru are a lot more comfortable, actually. Must be something in the seat configuration, I guess.

However, you still can't beat the in-flight service provided by MAS, though. Service was courteous, friendly and pleasant.

Fed: Feral pigs could become "reservoir" for swine flu: Opp'n

CANBERRA, Aug 4 AAP - Feral pig populations could become a breeding reservoir for swine
flu making the disease impossible to eradicate, the federal opposition says.

The warning comes after 2,000 pigs on a property at Dunedoo, in the central west of
NSW, were found to have contracted swine flu.

The farm has been quarantined since last Friday.

Authorities have said the health of the pigs has improved and the disease has been
contained to the property.

Opposition agriculture spokesman John Cobb praised the piggery owner for taking quick
quarantine measures and notifying authorities.

But he is concerned the virus may find its way into the feral pig population where
"it will be next to impossible to eradicate".

Feral pigs would become a "reservoir for the virus which has the potential to mutate
and come back as a meaner, nastier, deadlier virus".

State and federal governments should undertake a feral pig control program - involving
shooting, baiting and trapping swines - around the Dunedoo piggery to ensure the virus
did not spread, Mr Cobb said.

Meanwhile authorities have reassured the public that eating pork is safe.

Comment was being sought from federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke.

Fed: "No case to answer" Einfeld's lawyers say

By Amy Coopes

SYDNEY, Dec 12 AAP - A jury would not be satisfied former Federal Court judge Marcus
Einfeld was behind the wheel of his car when it was booked committing traffic offences,
his lawyers say.

Einfeld will learn tomorrow whether he will stand trial on 14 charges including perjury,
perverting the course of justice and traffic offences.

The former judge and human rights advocate has been facing a committal hearing in Sydney's
Downing Centre Local Court.

The 69-year-old is accused of making false statements and lying on oath that other
people - including a friend he knew to be dead - were driving his car when it was caught
speeding or running a red light four times between 1999 and 2006.

His barrister, Ian Barker QC, today urged Deputy Chief Magistrate Helen Syme to discharge
the case, saying there was not enough evidence Einfeld was behind the wheel on any of
the four separate occasions.

"We say, in effect, there is no case to answer," Mr Barker said.

"A jury could not be satisfied that Mr Einfeld was driving the car.

"We say all these charges fail as a matter of law."

Were the jury not convinced Einfeld was driving, they must also acquit him of the perjury
charges, Mr Barker said.

The high-profile hearing took on a celebrity flavour today when Sky News presenter
John Mangos gave evidence for the prosecution.

Mr Mangos said he ran into Einfeld at the beachfront restaurant, Pilu, at Freshwater
on January 8 last year between 3.30 and 4pm.

Einfeld's car was booked speeding at Mosman, some 10km away, at 4.01pm.

But the former judge later swore on oath he had loaned his car to a friend and was
driving his mother's car.

Einfeld's lunch companion that day, Vivian Schenker, told police he picked her up in
his silver Lexus, retracting her earlier statement he was driving Rosa Einfeld's car when
confronted with evidence to the contrary.

Mr Mangos said Einfeld approached his table some time between 3.30pm and 3.56pm, when
the TV presenter paid his bill.

They spoke for about five minutes, recounting the day they met at Cairo Airport, en
route to Israel, 25 years ago.

Mr Mangos said they talked about his upcoming trip to Israel and planned choice of
hotel in Jerusalem.

"I told him `this time I'm fulfilling my ambition to stay at the King David' and he
congratulated me on my choice of hotel," Mr Mangos said, to laughter in the court.

Pilu manager Grant Burtenshaw said Einfeld paid his $163.35 lunch bill at 3.34pm, and
the table was closed on the computer system at 3.40pm.

"It doesn't mean they had left the restaurant," Mr Burtenshaw told the court, which
was crowded with Einfeld's family and friends.

Lawyers say timing is "critical" to putting Einfeld in his car and at the Mosman speed
camera at the relevant time.

Lawyers for Einfeld's co-accused, Angela Liati, closed their case today.

Liati, who has allegedly never met Einfeld and has no connection with him, is accused
of perverting the course of justice by making a false statement that she was with a "Theahresa
Brennan" in his car on January 8.

Kieran Ginges said there was no evidence to show there was a police investigation on
foot, or any "course of justice" to pervert, when Liati made her statement to Einfeld's
lawyers on August 14.

Prosecutors allege Liati made the statement in the wake of widespread publicity about
the case in an attempt to help Einfeld.

She too will learn her fate tomorrow.

NSW: Easter celebrated in prayer - and the show

By Adam Bennett

SYDNEY, April 14 AAP - As thousands gathered in churches and took part in activities
to reflect on the religious message of Easter, Sydney's Royal Easter Show was on track
to record its biggest Good Friday crowd.

Church leaders around the country called for people to celebrate life through the resurrection
of Jesus as about 1,000 people turned out in Sydney for a re-enactment of Jesus Christ's
crucifixion walk.

Cardinal George Pell, the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, said Good Friday and Easter
Sunday represented Christianity's central claims "that Jesus, the man God, died on the
cross and rose from death".

The Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart issued a plea for compassion and understanding
in his Good Friday message.

"I hope that compassion, understanding and realising the goodness inherent in all people
can build up the society in which we live," Archbishop Hart said.

Herman Wainggai, one of 42 Papuan asylum seekers recently granted a temporary protection
visa, called for justice during a Good Friday church service in Melbourne.

"Today we hope, inside this big Catholic church with all of you as Christians, we hope
that justice can occur, that protection given to us from the Australian government will
be given to anyone else who needs protection, who needs justice."

The Wesley Mission's re-enactment of Jesus Christ's crucifixion walk - now one of Sydney's
annual Easter fixtures - was joined by hundreds of onlookers.

The 15-minute procession from Martin Place to the Wesley Theatre on Pitt Street had
"swept people up," the Mission's Graeme Cole said.

"People were just swept up in the procession. And by the time we got to the Wesley
Theatre there would have been 1,000 people," Mr Cole said.

At the Easter show, it was the biggest day of the biggest weekend in what is set to
be the biggest Sydney Royal Easter Show on record.

More than 100,000 people had poured into the Olympic Showgrounds at Homebush by this
evening, and the show's general manager John Aitken said organisers were confident last
year's Good Friday record of 147,000 would topple.

"We'll do in excess of 120,000 today, and anything between 120,000 and 150,000 is huge,"

Mr Aitken said.

The 2006 show has been blessed with good weather, and Mr Aitken said the show was on
track to break the one million visitors mark before it ends on Thursday.

Proving that the more things change, the more they stay the same, the showbag pavilion
has again proved the major drawcard.

This was despite stiff competition from the fashion show, rock venue The Shed, and
human cannonball Lady Cannonball.

Queues into the showbag pavilion stretched for more than 100 metres as thousands of
showgoers jostled to get their piece of Bertie Beetle, Bart Simpson and Thomas the Tank
Engine.

Fifteen-year-old Kellyville boy Sevag Assadourian, who had seven bags, said he had
come to the show just to buy bags and "that's it".

"You can go on rides anywhere, but the showbags only come once a year," Sevag said.

The main arena was packed with an audience keen to see Lady Cannonball - 21 year-old
American Stephanie Havens - shot 40 metres into a net on the other side of the stadium.

Disappointed fashionistas had to be turned away from this afternoon's crowded Shapes
Parade Australian fashion show, which proved to be one of success stories of this year's
show.

Music lovers crammed into the Shed to hear Joe Camilleri and Richard Clapton play.

The Whitlams will play the new rock venue tonight.

Qld: Inquiry told Bentley had strong ideas on racing industry

By John Sheed

BRISBANE, April 7 AAP - Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley had strong ideas about
how the state's racing industry should be run and there was no point in pushing alternatives,
an inquiry was told today.

Former chief executive officer Jeremy Turner told the Queensland Thoroughbred Racing
Inquiry, which is this week investigating staff turnover in Queensland Racing, that in
early 2003 Mr Bentley had given him a handwritten flow chart on how he wanted a restructure
to take place.

"I had some concerns because it was not the restructure I had envisaged," Mr Turner said.

He said his own ideas "bore no resemblance" to those of Mr Bentley but he later supported
the restructure when it was presented to the board and subsequently implemented.

"There was no point in me discussing my ideas with the chairman. He had his ideas,"

Mr Turner said while being cross-examined by Queensland Racing counsel Jim Murdoch.

Mr Murdoch asked why Mr Turner had not placed his concerns before the board.

"I was uneasy with some of the content but I was happy for it to go forward with my
name on it because I work for the chairman," Mr Turner said.

He said he had "battled around the edges" to get some minor changes "but at the end
of the day it was his structure that was going forward".

Earlier Mr Turner said because of Mr Bentley's aggressive attitude towards chief steward
Steve Railton it had become clear that Mr Bentley wanted him out of the industry.

Mr Railton was made redundant under the restructure.

"He had a very strong view that Mr Railton was not a very effective steward, that he
was soft and going after easy targets," Mr Turner said.

"It was clear to me Mr Bentley didn't want him in the organisation."

Mr Turner, whose own job was terminated in May 2004, said he did not agree with Mr
Bentley's views on Mr Railton.

"I found them very hard to reconcile because I have the view that Mr Railton was a
very efficient and hard-working steward."

The inquiry, in the Brisbane Magistrates Court, was expected to hear evidence from
Mr Railton tomorrow.
